Construction Post 26: Edit week 2: Titles, video FX, grading

What was the focus of edit week 2?

1. grading
Due to our film genre we wanted to darken and increase the contrast of every shot so that it would appear a lot more mysterious. Especially for the scenes that had the antagonist so this meant that he would appear unapproachable and 'eerie' fitting his role. we took inspiration from a lot of other horror films, this particular grading style is very popular. We looked at Don't Breathe which had minimal light throughout the film

Because of the successful grading in our film we achieved the
tone that we were going for

An issue with grading was the normal lighting in the room which came from the yellow-orange walls, cream curtains and not to mention the yellow toned light sources- this affected the lighting of the shot making everything appear orange-red. This made the grading a bit more complex, however this was only in certain shots of Location 1 and so it was not a huge problem. In hindsight we probably shouldn't of used a room that didn't have white walls and wasn't very bright because then editing would have been a lot smoother and faster

2. effects
We didn't use too many video FX in our film opening as we wanted it to appear very authentic, however we did use visual FX towards the climax of the sequence when the camera fell and broke.
Below is a gif of that shot that was edited by Sailesh.

We used a 'glitch' effect, 'wave warp' and noise FX so tat the audience would understand that something was interfering with the report. We took most of our inspiration for the news reporter scenes from Quarantine.

disaster

3. creating titles
We created titles on a different software, 'LiveType' this is because there was a lot more room to edit the titles with different effects etc. We used the 'frigid' effect and the 'drop in' effect on the title 'Disturbances'.
our film title
We chose white titles as that was the most complimentary to our dark shots. We also made the titles regular, so that there was not a long gap between each one. The inspiration for our titles came from a variety of similar genre films such as the "woman in black' and 'se7en'
